05. May 1000x1000

This event is part of Environment for the Americas Bird Book Club

As dusk settles and migration fills the skies, join Environment for the Americas for a special Bird Book Club conversation with wildlife biologist and author Gretchen Newberry, in celebration of World Migratory Bird Day.

In The Nighthawk’s Evening, Newberry shares her journey from an office job to a life spent studying one of North America’s most mysterious birds: the common nighthawk. Known for its raspy nighttime calls and acrobatic flight, this nocturnal migrant nests on rooftops, travels thousands of miles from Alaska to Argentina, and gathers in swirling flocks during migration often right above our cities.

Through fieldwork that spans rooftops, sagebrush, forests, and islands across the continent, Newberry brings readers into the hidden world of nocturnal wildlife and the realities of studying birds after dark. Along the way, she explores the nighthawk’s remarkable adaptations, its cultural significance, and the conservation challenges it faces in a rapidly changing world.

This engaging conversation with the author will dive into migration, urban wildlife, nighttime field research, and what it means to protect species that many of us hear but rarely see. Perfect for birders, science lovers, night owls, and anyone curious about the unseen lives of birds on the move. Come ready to ask questions, share observations, and celebrate migration after hours.
