Wisconsin Rare Bird Records

This listing of 119 bird species consists of all species classified as accidental plus most that are classified as casual for Wisconsin. Hypothetical species are also included. All accepted state records for these 119 species were gathered from Samuel D. Robbins’ book Wisconsin Birdlife (1991) and from the Seasonal Field Notes of The Passenger Pigeon (1939 to the present).

These collected records were then sent to the following state birders for feedback and criticism – Thomas C. Erdman, James C. Frank, John H. Idzikowski, Mark J. Korducki, Kenneth I. Lange, William P. Mueller, Mark S. Peterson, Thomas R. Schultz, Jerry H. Smith, Thomas K. Soulen and Daryl D. Tessen. After review by these birders, certain records gathered from the Seasonal Field Notes were found to be incorrect and were thus eliminated. Likewise, a record for a Mississippi Kite was added based on a specimen not previously noted. The above mentioned birders have now examined the corrected records and have found no further fault with them. In the future, if any of these birders or any other person should find errors in these records, please let me know so that the needed corrections can be made. With that said, the following records for Wisconsin’s rare birds are the most complete and exact that I know to exist. In addition, this listing will be kept in continual update as the WSO Records Committee accepts new reports.

I thank each of you for your help and advice. Replies can be made by e-mail. My e-mail address is rcd@execpc.com.
