Wisconsin has 92 BBS routes. As a quick refresher, each route is conducted once per year. It consists of 50 stops, one-half mile apart. For each stop the observer records all birds seen and hear during a three minute period. Routes start one-half hour before sunrise and typically take 4-5 hours to conduct. June is the main month for running the routes, after the spring migration is finished. This usually mean during the last three weeks but if necessary it can be conducted during early July (first week maximum). Observers must be good at recognizing BOTH birds and their songs. Equally important, reports are due at Patuxent MD by July 15.
