Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report
Coverage: Dodge Cty. (Horicon Marsh Area)
Date: 09/09/00
Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for September 9th.
The Black-necked Stilt is still being seen at Horicon Marsh, as it has been
reported this past Wednesday and again this morning. The bird was again
present in the same location as first reported. Go west from the metal pump
house on Hwy. 49 until you come to the first ditch running south from the
road. The stilt has been seen at the far end of the ditch, so a scope might
be necessary to ID this bird. The stilt has been moving around a lot and
the few lucky birders, who have found this bird, have had only a short time
to view it before it flies off or moves behind the cattails.
Other shorebirds reported seen this morning at this location were: Gr. and
Ls. Yellowlegs, Solitary SP, Spotted SP, Semipalmated SP, Least SP, Pectoral
SP, Stilt SP, Common Snipe, and one Red-necked Phalarope.
For those interested in the A & W Ponds, the report is NO WATER and until
this area receives a large amount of rain, it will remain DRY. Another
location that has shorebird habitat is the NWR Boardwalk. This, however, is
the last weekend that you will be able to drive the auto tour until next
spring. The trails do remain open to hiking and the autoroute is also open
to biking.
The Main Dike Road also closes after this weekend and good numbers of
American White Pelicans were seen from this road this morning.

members on any of these sightings or others that you may have, please feel

Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report
Coverage: Dodge Cty. (Horicon Marsh Area)
Date: 09/03/00
Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for September 3rd.
The Black-necked Stilt that was first seen on Saturday is still being seen
today. The bird was reported seen as late as 4:30 PM at the same location as
the Wisbirdn post yesterday. The location is the impoundment just west of
the new pump house that is located on the south side of Hwy. 49. Driving
west from this metal pump house, look for the stilt at the first ditch on
the south side of "49". The bird is being seen almost at the very southern
end of this ditch. Look closely along the east side of the ditch and you
will see a small strip of mud extending out from a small bay that lies
hidden by cattails. This mud and the area just west of it is where the
stilt has been seen.

GOOD BIRDING from the Horicon Marsh Bird Club.
Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report
Coverage: Horicon Marsh NWR (Dike Rd.) - Dodge Cty.
Date: 5/28/00
Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for May 28, 2000.
The easterly winds that we had today uncovered a large area of mud, just
north of the new water control structure on Dike Road. This road divides
the NWR and the State Wildlife Area. The following birds were seen before
noon today from this location. Be aware that the mudflats in this area are
just showing and any change in wind direction or more rain may cover this
area with enough water to make the shorebirds move to another location. It
is sort of like "now you see me" (mudflats/shorebirds) "now you don't" (high
water/no or few shorebirds). Other areas such as the AW Ponds and the
surrounding area are "dry" even with the high amount of rain lately. It
seems like anything north of Hwy. 33 received much less rain or that the
soil was far more in need of rain, so everything has soaked in the ground.
Birds seen from Dike Road:

Forster's Tern
Winter Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Hermit Thrush
Northern Waterthrush
White-crowned Sparrow
Approximately 30 Am. White Pelicans were seen both Sat. and Sun. on Horicon
Marsh NWR. Look for them in the center of the refuge from Cty. Z on the
east side of the marsh. Being careful of traffic, pull off "Z" on the top
of the hill just south of the Refuge Headquarters. A scope will be needed
to make ID possible.
An American Bittern was seen from Hwy. 49 this morning. As well as heard on
Thursday from Ledge Road. Forster's Terns made their spring arrival today
and were seen from "49". Sora Rails were heard from "49" and the Auto Tour
Route off of "49".
Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Hermit Thrushes were observed at many locations
today.
What is probably the same White-crowned Sparrow that "over wintered" along
the marsh was seen both Sat. and Sun. from W. Point Road on the east side of
the refuge. Look for the sparrow on the north end of the corn crib, by the
first farm, south of Ledge Road. It was seen moving from the corn to the
trees/brush (perches here) next to the crib.
A few Winter Wrens were seen at Dodge Cty. Ledge Park (just east of Horicon)
as was a Northern Waterthrush. Look for the waterthrush at the "lower"
Ledge. It was seen feeding in the shallow water of the small creek next to
the bathrooms.

Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for 2/27/00. Bird species are
followed with coordinates from DeLorme's Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer.
Species Mentioned in this Report
Ross's Geese - Page 45 D7
Greater White-fronted Geese - Page 45 D6 and 37 B5
Glaucous Gull - Page D7
Two ROSS'S GEESE were seen this morning along Oakwood Road west of Hwy. 151.
Oakwood Rd. is located south of the city of Waupun. It can be reached from
Hwy. 151 or Hwy. 26. The geese were seen VERY close to the road on the
north side about 1/2 way between Hwy. 151 and Hwy. 26. I imagine that the
location of these birds will change, but hopefully the birds will remain in
the general area for a while and by scanning the many Canada goose flocks
these birds might be relocated. Please let this hotline know, if they are
found someplace else.
As far as this birder is concerned, the number of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE that are present in Dodge County is at an all-time high. No fewer
than 130 of these geese were seen today. 26+ of these geese were seen just
east of the Cty. A and Breezy Point Road intersection. There was a large
flock of Canada's here and the white-fronteds along with 6 Snow Geese were
mixed in. This is very close to the A & W Ponds. Over 21 white-fronteds
were located off of Cty. J south of the intersection with Cty. G, which is
south of the city of Beaver Dam. Look for the geese on the west side of "J"
about a mile south of this intersection. Many other white-fronteds were
seen throughout the county. Most birds were in pairs or small flocks of 4
to 6 birds, all mixed in with Canada's.
A first winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen from the west end of Ledge Road in the
Horicon Marsh NWR. The entire marsh was treated this winter to remove the
overpopulation on carp and with it may bring large numbers of gulls, for
the easy pickings of bird sushi. As more ice melts more fish will be
available for gulls to dine on.
The following are the species that appeared on one Club member's checklists

Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report
Coverage: Dodge Cty.
Date: 2/20/00
Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for 2/20/00. Bird species are
followed with coordinates from DeLorme's Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer.
Species Mentioned in this Report
SHORT-EARED OWLS - Page 37 A5
MEADOWLARK sps. - Page 46 D1
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW - Page 46 D1
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW - Page 46 D1
6 SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen evenings in the Hawk Rd. and Cty. CC area.
Hawk Rd. is located directly west, across the lake from the City of Beaver
Dam. Take Cty. DE north from Hwy. 151 and continue to Cty. G. Turn north
(left) on Cty. G and in about one mile turn left (west) on Hawk Rd.
Continue on Hawk Rd. crossing the RR Tracks and in a short time you will see
a large marsh on the north side of the road. Keep driving until you get a
clear view of a large patch of Red Dogwood. There is a triangle sign next
to the road and you can park a little west of here to give you the best view
of the marsh. The Owls have being making an appearance as early as 4 PM and
can be seen until dark. Cty. CC is the next road north of Hawk Rd. Take
Cty. G north from Cty. DE and you will come to "CC" in a mile or so. You
will find marshy/grassy areas on both sides of the road where the owls have
been observed.
A MEADOWLARK of undetermined species has been seen on and off for a week from
Ledge Rd. west of Point Rd. on the NE corner of the Horicon Marsh NWR.
Watch as you slowly drive down the hill into the marsh. The bird has been
seen perched along the road and fence lines in this area.
Close by at the first farm south of Ledge Rd. on Point Rd. a single
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW has been seen either close to the corncrib or in the
farmyard itself.
Three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are still present at the feeders of the
Greenhead Clubhouse at the end of Greenhead Rd. This road is located west
of the city of Mayville in the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area.
There are still plenty of Rough-legged Hawks to be seen around the entire
marsh. Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs can be seen in the
open farmland areas, east of the NWR. Centerline Rd., Cty. H, Ledge Rd. and
Point Rd. are your best bets. The snows of this past week have pushed the
birds close to the roadsides to look for food. An adult pair of Bald Eagles
are using the marsh to winter at, and by closely scanning the marsh interior
you might be able to locate them.

Welcome to the Horicon Marsh Bird Club Report for 1/29/00. Bird species are
followed with coordinates from DeLorme's Wisconsin Atlas & Gazetteer.
Species Mentioned in this Report:
Common Mergansers - Page 37 A6
Bald Eagles/Rough-legged Hawks - Page 45 D7
SHORT-EARED OWLS - Page 37 A5
A few COMMON MERGANSERS are trying to over-winter on the Beaver Dam River,
on the south side of the city of Beaver Dam. The ducks were seen just north
of Hwy. 151 as it goes over the river. By driving slowly along S. Center
Rd. you will have good views of the river. Exit from Hwy. 151 on to Cty. G
(Spring St.). Turn toward the city and take the first thru-street to the
left and by driving a few blocks you will come to Center Rd. (Center St.).
Turn left (south) again and watch for the river on your left.
Two adult BALD EAGLES and 10 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen from Tower Rd.
This road is only about a mile long and runs from Hwy. 26 east to a dead
end. Turn east at the church that is at the intersection of 26/Tower. The
hawks/eagles were seen feeding at the newly spread manure. Look for them
before the last farm on Tower and again at the very dead end. Whatever is
mixed in with the manure (I don't even want to know) sure is attractive to
these birds.
6 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen again this evening from Hawk Rd. Hawk Rd. is
located directly west, across the lake from the City of Beaver Dam. Take
Cty. DE north from Hwy. 151 and continue to Cty. G. Turn north (left) on
Cty. G and in about one mile turn left (west) on Hawk Rd. Continue on Hawk
Rd. crossing the RR Tracks and in a short time you will see a large marsh on
the north side of the road. Keep driving until you get a clear view of a
large patch of Red Dogwood. There is a triangle sign next to the road and
you can park a little west of here to give you the best view of the marsh.
The Owls first appear between 4:30 and 5:00 pm. This evening they were
first seen at 5 minutes to 5 and within 3-4 minutes they dispersed in
different directions in pursuit of their evening meal. Two of the birds
flew within 50 feet or so of the road giving this birder his best view ever,
of these birds in flight. 8 Rough-legged Hawk, 2 N. Harriers and a Great
Horned Owl were also seen while waiting for the owls to appear.

Northern Shrike - page 38 A1 and page 46 D1
Common Redpoll - page 46 D1
Snow Buntings/Lapland Longspurs - page 46 D1
Rough-legged Hawk - most locations all around the marsh
NORTHERN SHRIKES were seen today at two locations. At the end of Palmatory St. in Horicon (DNR Field Office) along the hiking trail and along West Point Rd. on the NE corner of the NWR. Both birds were seen perched high in trees looking for a meal.
A flock of about 30 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen at a farmhouse along Centerline Rd., which is located just south of Hwy. 49 on the NE side of the Horicon Marsh NWR. The farm is on the west side of Centerline between North Point Rd. and Zangl Rd. The birds were seen feeding at the barnyard and perched in the pines that are around the house.
A flock of 300-400 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen feeding at the freshly spread manure on Ledge Rd. Ledge Rd. is again located on the NE corner of the NWR between Cty. Z and Centerline Rd. If one takes a closer look, you will find a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS mixed in the buntings.
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS can be seen at many locations around the entire Horicon Marsh. 14 hawks were seen by one birder that circled the marsh this morning.
