Glaucous Gull
White-crowned Sparrow
Northern Pintail
A flock of about 35 Bohemian Waxwings was seen on the NWTC campus on Feb. 28th. They were mixed in with a larger flock of Cedar Waxwings. A Snowy Owl was present at the intersection of Cty P and Humboldt Rd in the Town of Sugarbush on Thursday March 4th. On Thursday March 4th there was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the Kewaunee harbor. There were also several Glaucous Gulls and a first winter Thayer's Gull present that same day. On Sunday Feb. 28th there was an adult Glaucous Gull on the ice off the west side of Kidney Island in Green Bay. A first winter Iceland Gull was seen at the Kewaunee harbor on Tuesday March 2nd. A first year White-crowned Sparrow was seen at Barkhausen County Park in Suamico on Sunday Feb. 28th. The bird was in the brush along the pond behind the feeders. It is quite likely that this bird has overwintered at the park as it will be about 6 weeks before White-crowneds begin moving through the area in significant numbers and the earliest migrants are generally birds in adult plumage. A Northern Pintail was also present at Barkhausen on Feb. 28th. Very unusual was a Pileated Woodpecker seen at the Hwy 41 & Velp Avenue interchange on Thursday March 4th. Pileateds are scarce in Brown County
and this location is not close to any suitable habitat. First reports of Red-winged Blackbirds (2/28) and Ring-necked Ducks (3/2) in Brown County were received this week.
Green Bay Hotline Report for 2/4/99.
Birds mentioned:
Bohemian Waxwing
Snowy Owl
Gray Partridge
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Thayer's Gull
Iceland Gull
A flock of 200 Bohemian Waxwings were seen in Bailey's Harbor in Door County on 1/27. An immature Snowy Owl was seen at the intersection of Luxemburg Rd and Cty P on 1/30, 31 & 2/3. This is about 1 mile east of the location where two snowies have been seen over the past few weeks. Gray Partridge continue to be fairly easy to find in the Glenmore Rd area south of De Pere. There is no patrticular time of day that is best for finding partridge. Drive the area slowly and scan the fields frequently and you will eventually turn up a covey. To reach Glenmore Rd. take I-43 south to the Hwy 29/MM exit and turn right on MM. Follow it to Glenmore and turn left. The Kewaunee harbor is excellent for gulls right now. The best time to check is in the afternoon after the commercial fishing boats have returned. On 2/3 there was an adult Lesser Black-backed , 14 Great Black-backed, 21 Glaucous, 4 Thayer's and 1 Iceland present.

Birds mentioned:
Short-eared Owl
Snowy Owl
Gray Partridge
Bohemian Waxwing
Peregrine Falcon
Bald Eagle (13)
Two Short-eared Owls were seen on 1/3 in southern Door County. The birds were seen along Kohlberg Rd. between Flat Rd. and Cty D. This is near the Xmas tree farm where a large concentration of Short-eared Owls were present several years ago. This area is detailed on pg. 68 of the WI Gazetteer. From Green Bay take Hwy 57 north through the town of Brussels and turn right on Cty XC. Follow XC to Cty D and turn left. From D turn right on Kohlberg Rd. There are two Snowy Owls present near the mouth of the Fox River. Be aware that the bay is now completely frozen and these birds can be difficult to locate if they are sitting on the ice. Checking the rocks around the new impoundment on the east side of the river and at nearby Kidney Island are good bets for finding one of the birds. 6 Gray Partridge were seen along Mayline Rd south of Green Bay on 1/4. Take I-43 south from Green Bay to the MM exit and turn right. Follow MM to Glenmore Rd and turn right and then look for Mayline Rd which parallels I-43. Look for a large manure pile near a farm. The birds were seen feeding near the pile twice this week. All of the roads south of this area are good for Gray Partridge during the winter. There were 6 Bohemian Waxwings seen along Main Street in the town of Luxemburg on 1/6 and there were 30 seen is Sister Bay on 1/7. The Sister Bay flock was found on Meadow Lane just west of its intersection with Hwy 42. The mouth of the Fox River is good for raptors right now. This week, in addition to the Snowy Owls, there have been at least 13 Bald Eagles, a Northern Harrier, 2 Rough-legged Hawks, several Red-tailed Hawks and a Peregrine Falcon.
